This review seems to have had our readers a little unstuck.
Feedback from our recent Mamma Raj survey was split:
- 33% of people of people said just go with an ordinary tote, backpack or messenger bag rather than a specific “Nappy/Baby Bag”.
- 33% provided recommendations on brands they would recommend (see below)
- 33% said they would like recommendations /suggestions as they didn’t know !!
Interesting….! Recently I have seen more of the designer brands come on board and creating specific baby bags which is nice to finally see!
However, whatever your preference, there are some key attributes parents have recommended that you need to shop for – whether it is specific nappy bag or just a ordinary bag:
|Attribute||Things to look for|
|Straps||Sturdy straps that are large enough to fit across pram handles|
|Outside Pockets||Outside pockets (a must for quick access!!) rather than rummaging around trying to find what you are looking for on the inside of the bag|
|Bag Opening||Good opening – a zip is ideal! You don’t want to have a bag that is hard to open or fiddly like a latch when you have an emergency!(My cousin calls its a number 3 as some poo’s have their own definition and are much more than a number 2!)|
|Inside pockets||Inside pockets of course that are big enough to fit a bottle of water/ bottles for milk. Also it is good to have different sections for the baby/kids stuff and your stuff (i.e. cosmetics/ phone)|
|Durability||Durable fabric that is easy to wipe down – you will use this bag EVERYWHERE. So it can get dirty easily and needs to be easily cleaned. Consider the inside AND outside fabric’s ability to be cleaned easily|
|Size||Size is really up to the parent. Some like a big to fit everything in, some like it less bulky- however you will be surprised how many items you need to pack particular if you have more than one child down the track|
AND here are the brands that our parents have shared for other parents to consider on their shopping shortlist for nappy bags:
Isle of Charlie
This brand positions itself as made of real leather bag and all bags are large and stylish. Their bags come with Mummy essentials (all removable) such as change mat, bottle warmer and best of all it is so sleek that you can use it as a normal handbag post baby. Check out their website here
These designer bags come with a designer price-tag. Celebrities love them and you will too. They have a leather and non-leather collections, they all have great pockets inside and out and zip out lining (important for washing!) Check out their website here
This is a bag that Dad won’t shy away from. It is specifically designed for him. Yes, this means that Dad’s won’t get embarrassed walking down the street with this bag and Mum will love it too. It is ergonomic, across the chest design that is super comfortable, has a great adjustable strap and elasticised bottle pocket in addition to the 3 exterior zip closed pockets. This comes with a really reasonable price tag Check out their website here
With their signature Mimco rose gold turnlock hardware, this baby bag is made out of durable nylon with top handles and shoulder straps. What this means is it is practical and easy to wipe down. With loads of pockets inside, a helpful strap for the pram and a great weekender bag once your baby is grown this is a great little numbers to trot around with. Check out their website
A well known brand with great credentials. They have a large range of nappy bags with good space, pockets and detachable straps. Check out their website here
Oroton received a couple of votes but created quite a mixed reaction. Some said it was great, others said this bag didn’t have enough pockets and they wouldn’t recommend this nappy bag. So I thought I would include Oroton but with caveats so you can make your own mind up. Check out their website
Another key recommendation was to get your hands on a baby roll or a portable baby essential kit. Basically what this is small sized wallet that includes a foldable change mat and pocket for nappies /wipes etc. This is by far the easiest way just to throw into the pram or put in any bag including your nappy bag you are taking out that day. A great product to consider is the Skip Hop Pronto (they also have some great nappy bags too to check out). I love their designs! Check out Mamma Raj’s review of this product here

It is not easy deciding on a bag that will be attached to you for quite some time. However my advice is think space particularly if you plan to bottle feed, avoid white/ cream bags and think about the attributes above. Happy Shopping!
