At Christmas one of our relatives forgot to pack undies for his trip to the country to enjoy the festive season with family.
Unfortunately in the country, the ability to shop for some spare pairs of underwear on Boxing Day isn’t an option as all the shops are closed. The other option of “borrowing” undies is just too cringe-worthy to even ask. How do you have that conversation…”So ummm got any undies I can borrow for the holidays?”… “So you know all I want for Xmas is … ”
Rookie mistake on the packing relo!
I believe over the 3 days he tried the inside out trick before trying to quickly wash and dry without a full day of commando (way too much information for me I have to say!). As much as this made us laugh and made good banter that will last decades (!!), after reading the latest research undertaken from Panasonic Australia this is apparently not unusual for Australians.
What the!!! I hear you say.
Unfortunately the research doesn’t paint a great picture for our hygiene but perhaps as parents we are just trying to get through the day as best as we can. My mantra is “whatever works!”
I know my laundry basket – well baskets! – are never empty no matter how hard I try. And I do find laundry entirely dull – although thank goodness I’m not a 50’s housewife without a washing machine or dryer. Oh the horror of hand washing!
- Here are some snippets from the research:
*Nationally, over half (53%) of respondents admitted to having done the ‘sniff test’ to see if they could get away with re-wearing dirty clothes
*When out of clean underwear, 1/3 have re-worn underwear for a second or third day, ‘gone commando’ or worn speedos/swimmers
*1/4 confessed to using deodorant or refresher sprays on clothes to avoid washing them
*Over a third (36%) of young families haven’t washed their kids’ stuffed toys in over a year
*A further 15% admitting to having never washed their kids’ stuffed toys
*1 in 10 respondents never wash quilts, pillows, and cushions meaning households could be exposed to the effects of allergens
And 89% of us shoulder laundry responsibilities. Its good to know that most of the households are all chipping in for the mundane task of laundry.
So my relative is not alone and in fact in some instances, in the majority. However I’m sure it will be a long time before he forgets to pack underwear again. Note to self “ALWAYS PACK UNDERWEAR”.
What do you think of this research? Agree / disagree? Surprised? Leave a comment.
