I have some lovely gorgeous friends with bulging bellies asking at the moment what they need to get before they have their babies.
Good question. I remember when I was pregnant with my first child I honestly didn’t know where to start. The whole “baby world” was confusing, expensive (!!) and it was like everyone talked a different language.
So here is a little bit of decoding to help expectant parents on the way to your destination: “Baby World”.
Firstly there is heap of stuff to buy. I’m not going to sugar coat it. Take whatever you can borrow. Seriously don’t worry if there is some bite marks on the side of that cot – those things can cost up to $1000! Plus if family/ friends are looking to chip in, get them to get help on those big items.
There are two key things I think you can’t do without – a car seat so you can actually leave the hospital and a place for your baby to sleep when they get home.
For car seats, there is a great site that keeps you up to date on the best models on the market and does an independent evaluation on the safety of the models http://www.crep.com.au/
There are many different types of sleeping arrangements you can make for your baby but eventually you will need a cot so here is some tips for looking for a good cot.
For those bulging bellies, one minute you seem to be tracking along ok in oversized clothing and then BOOM so go from being awkwardly fat (ahem pregnant) to REALLY pregnant – anything with stretch is good! Getting some key pieces of maternity clothing will not only make you feel better but you will feel a thousand times more comfortable. Here are my tips on winter maternity wear. I have found Queen Bee Maternity a good place to start as it holds most of the Australian maternity wear brands in one place.
If you are like me, I left packing my hospital bag really to the last minute. There are definitely some items you will need over your stay so better to be more organised than be stuck in hospital without spare undies!
And then you are home. Where to start. It is a new chapter in your life with a new bundle of joy.
So lastly here are some tips on clothing from a mum that loves to dress up her kids.
Enjoy the ride!
